Vertical Calculator to Dunk – Measure and Improve Your Jump for Dunking
Dunking a basketball is thrilling, but getting there is more about science than luck. Many players attempt to improve their vertical jump through random workouts without ever knowing the actual number they're chasing.
What a Vertical Calculator Does
A vertical calculator takes your height, standing reach, and rim height, then tells you exactly how many inches or centimeters of jump you need to add to dunk. It removes the guesswork from training.
The Formula Behind It
Required Vertical = (Rim Height + Clearance) − Standing Reach
Clearance accounts for the extra space you need above the rim to actually control the ball, typically 15–20 cm (6–8 in).
Turning the Number Into a Plan
- Under 10 cm gap: Focus on technique — approach steps and takeoff timing.
- 10–20 cm gap: Mix strength training with plyometrics over 3–4 months.
- 20+ cm gap: Build a long-term strength base first, then layer in explosive work.
Track Your Progress
Re-test your vertical every few weeks using the same method each time (standing reach vs. highest touch point on a jump). Consistency in measurement matters more than the exact tool you use.
